Part 1: Your Mod & Batteries – The Powerhouse

Hey folks,
Your Old Goat here, kicking off a brand-new series all about keeping your vape gear in tip-top shape. We spend good money on this stuff, and it works hard for us—so a bit of regular care is the least we can do. Proper maintenance isn’t just about making your gear look pretty; it’s about consistent performance, longer life, and most importantly, your safety.

We’re starting at the heart of your vape setup: your mod and batteries. These are the brains and brawn of your cloud-chucking rig. Let’s make sure they’re not being neglected.

Section 1: Your Mod – The Brains and Brawn

Your mod is your command center. It houses your batteries, regulates power, and holds everything together. Unfortunately, it also collects pocket lint, juice leaks, dust, dog hair, and—if you're like me—a few crumbs from yesterday's snack. Let’s clean it up.

1. External Wipe Down – Bye Bye Gunk

Why it Matters: A clean mod just feels better in your hand. Plus, grime can creep into your buttons, screen, or ports over time.

How-To: Grab a soft microfiber cloth—barely damp, not wet. Give your mod a daily or every-other-day once-over. Got sticky spots from juice leaks? Use a dab of rubbing alcohol on the cloth (never directly on the mod) and wipe gently. Be extra cautious around screens and rubberized finishes.

🐐 Old Goat Tip: Avoid strong cleaners or abrasive pads. You’re cleaning a vape, not scrubbing a barbecue.

2. The 510 Connection – The Critical Link

Why it Matters: A dirty 510 can cause poor connectivity, power drops, or those annoying “check atomizer” errors.

How-To: Remove your atomizer. Use a dry cotton swab or a dedicated soft toothbrush to clean the threads and the center pin. For stubborn grime, a wooden toothpick works wonders—gently.

🐐 Old Goat Tip: Never, ever use metal tools here unless you want to short your mod or damage your threads. Not worth it.

3. USB-C Port – Charging’s Front Door

Why it Matters: If this port gets blocked with gunk, charging issues follow—and sometimes permanent damage.

How-To: Use a blast of compressed air or a dry toothbrush to gently clear it. Don’t jam things in there. Be gentle.

🐐 Old Goat Tip: Got external batteries? Use a proper charger. Charging through the port constantly can wear down the charging circuit faster than you can say "dead mod."

4. Buttons, Screens & Air Vents

Why it Matters: Sticky buttons suck. Fogged-up screens? Same. Blocked vents? Dangerous.

How-To: Cotton swab or soft cloth for the buttons and screen. Use compressed air for vents—especially if your mod’s been in your pocket or backpack lately.

🐐 Old Goat Tip: If your screen fogs up or gets sticky, there’s likely a leak nearby. Find it, fix it, or it’ll work its way inside and start frying things you don’t want fried.

5. Firmware – The Optional Upgrade

Why it Matters: Sometimes a firmware update can give your mod new life: better performance, new features, or bug fixes.

How-To: Check the manufacturer’s site and follow instructions to the letter. Usually, it means plugging the mod into your computer and running their software.

🐐 Old Goat Tip: Don’t fix what ain’t broke. But if a new update adds something sweet—like puff counters or improved ramp-up—it might be worth the jump.

Section 2: Your Batteries – The Real Power Behind the Clouds

Your mod may be the brain, but your batteries? They’re the heart. And if you mistreat your heart, it bites back—sometimes explosively. No joke here, folks. Battery safety isn’t optional.

1. Battery Safety – No Shortcuts Allowed

Why it Matters: Damaged wraps or improper handling can lead to shorts, venting, or worse.

How-To:

Inspect your wraps regularly. Nicks, tears, or exposed metal? Rewrap immediately.

Rewrap kits are cheap and easy. If you’re not comfortable doing it, your local vape shop probably is.

Store batteries in plastic cases or silicone sleeves—never loose in your pocket or bag.

Using a dual-battery mod? Marry your batteries (buy and charge them as a pair) and always use them together.

🐐 Old Goat Tip: If a battery looks wrong, smells wrong, or feels hot, ditch it. Don’t be a hero.

2. Cleaning Battery Contacts

Why it Matters: Dirty contacts = poor performance, extra heat, and wasted battery power.

How-To: Remove your batteries. Use a dry cotton swab with a drop of alcohol to clean both your batteries and the contacts inside your mod. Let it dry fully before use.

🐐 Old Goat Tip: Be gentle. Those contacts aren’t made to be bent or scraped.

3. Charging – Do It Right, Or Don’t Do It

Why it Matters: Improper charging shortens battery life, and in extreme cases, creates fire hazards.

How-To:

Use a dedicated external charger. Trust me, it’s worth it.

Stick to appropriate charge rates (0.5A–1A for 18650s/21700s is typically safe—check your battery specs).

Don’t leave batteries on the charger all night, every night.

Avoid draining them to zero. Most modern chargers and mods will stop before it’s too late, but don’t push it.

🐐 Old Goat Tip: A decent external charger is the best investment you’ll make after a good RTA.

Wrapping It All Up

That’s it for Part 1 of the Old Goat’s Guide! Keep your mod clean, your 510 shining, your batteries safe, and your charger doing the heavy lifting. A little bit of effort on maintenance can mean the difference between a smooth, flavourful vape—or a fire hazard in your hand.

Don’t learn the hard way. Keep things clean, charge smart, and respect your gear.

Coming up next: We’ll crack open your RDA or RTA and talk about cleaning out those nooks, crannies, and crusty juice stains. You’ll thank me later.

Until then, stay cloudy, stay safe—and holler below if you’ve got questions, stories, or your own maintenance tips.

Part 2: Your RDA/RTA – The Flavour Machine

Hey folks!
Your Old Goat here, back with Part 2 of our deep dive into vape maintenance. In Part 1, we gave your mod and batteries the TLC they deserve. Now it’s time to turn our attention to the business end of your vape—the part that does the actual magic: your RDA or RTA.

This is your flavour factory. It’s where your coils sizzle, your juice turns to vapour, and your taste buds do the happy dance. But let it get gunked up, and suddenly that mango custard tastes like burnt socks dipped in mud. So let’s make sure your atomizer stays clean, mean, and leak-free.

Section 1: General Principles for Cleaning Any Atomizer

Whether you’re running a dripper (RDA) or a rebuildable tank (RTA), the fundamentals of cleaning are the same. Think of it like doing dishes—just with more parts and fewer excuses.

1. Disassembly is Key

Why it Matters: You can’t clean what you can’t reach. E-liquid hides in every nook, cranny, thread, and under O-rings like it’s playing hide-and-seek.

How-To: Break it all down—drip tip off, barrel off, top cap off, glass removed (if applicable), and build deck exposed. Either remove the coils and wick for a deep clean, or leave them if you’re just doing a quick tidy-up.

🐐 Old Goat Tip: Take a photo before you tear it apart—especially if it’s a new tank. Saves you from playing puzzle master later.

2. Warm Water Rinse & Gentle Scrub

Why it Matters: This is your go-to method for breaking down sticky juice residue.

How-To: Rinse all metal and glass parts under warm water. Add a drop of unscented dish soap for stubborn grime. Scrub gently using a soft toothbrush, cotton swab, or tiny brush—especially around airflow holes, chimney sections, and threads.

🐐 Old Goat Tip: Still crusty? Soak it for 15–30 minutes in warm soapy water or a bit of rubbing alcohol. Just be sure to rinse like you mean it afterward.

3. Ultrasonic Cleaner – For That Extra Sparkle (Optional but Glorious)

Why it Matters: This little machine uses sound waves to shake loose every bit of grime from deep inside your gear.

How-To: After a manual scrub, drop your disassembled metal and glass parts into the ultrasonic cleaner filled with warm water. Add a drop of soap if needed. Run 1–2 short cycles (3–5 minutes each). Watch the water turn murky as the magic happens.

🐐 Old Goat Tip: Keep O-rings out of the ultrasonic cleaner—they can wear out quicker from the vibrations. Wash those little rubber wonders by hand.

4. Dry Everything—Completely

Why it Matters: Water in your tank means gurgling, misfires, or shorts. Don’t reassemble while things are still damp.

How-To: Shake off excess water, then towel-dry each piece with a lint-free cloth. Use cotton swabs or compressed air for tight spots. Let everything air dry for at least an hour.

🐐 Old Goat Tip: Leave the whole disassembled atomizer on a paper towel overnight. Dry as a desert by morning.

Section 2: Component-Specific Cleaning & Inspection

Once everything’s apart, here’s how to give each bit the attention it deserves.

1. Drip Tip – Your Lips’ Frontline

Why it Matters: It’s the part you put in your mouth. Enough said.

How-To: Warm rinse and a gentle brush inside and out. Pay extra attention to condensation inside the bore.

🐐 Old Goat Tip: Keep a few spare drip tips around—especially if you switch flavours often. It keeps ghosting to a minimum.

2. Top Cap, Chimney & Barrel – The Flavour Chamber

Why it Matters: These are the surfaces your vapour passes through. Gunk here means muted or muddled flavour.

How-To: Scrub inside the top cap and barrel. For RTAs, clean inside the chimney. Focus on airflow paths where residue loves to cling.

🐐 Old Goat Tip: If the chimney section detaches from the top cap, unscrew it for an even deeper clean.

3. The Build Deck – Where the Magic Starts

Why it Matters: This is where your coils live. If it’s nasty down here, flavour and performance suffer.

How-To: For a full clean, pull out the wick and coils. Scrub everything—deck, posts, juice wells—with a toothbrush and warm soapy water. Use a toothpick or dental pick to get into tight spaces.

🐐 Old Goat Tip: Pay attention around screws and under clamps—gunk hides there and ruins connection quality.

4. Glass Section (RTAs) – Your Juice Window

Why it Matters: Dirty glass = contaminated flavour and cloudy view of juice levels.

How-To: Wash inside and out. Rinse well. Check for cracks or chips—don’t vape on damaged glass.

🐐 Old Goat Tip: Always keep a spare glass tube handy. The floor is unforgiving.

5. O-Rings & Threads – The Unsung Heroes

Why it Matters: O-rings keep the juice in. Threads keep the pieces together. Clean and well-lubricated = smooth vaping.

How-To: Remove all O-rings during deep cleaning. Rinse and inspect for damage. Clean threads on all parts using a brush or swab. Before reassembly, apply a tiny bit of e-liquid to O-rings for smooth fitting.

🐐 Old Goat Tip: Stretched, torn, or flattened O-rings? Replace 'em. They’re cheap and save you from a leaky mess later.

Section 3: Fixing Problems While You Clean

Cleaning isn’t just hygiene—it’s a chance to diagnose and fix little issues before they become big ones.

Flavour Muting or Cross-Contamination

The Fix: Deep clean everything. That lingering cheesecake might be haunting your fruit punch. Old juice residue is flavour’s worst enemy.

Minor Leaks or Seepage

The Fix: Check and clean your O-rings. Ensure all threads are tight and properly sealed. One bad seal can cause a slow leak that ruins your day.

Stuck or Crunchy Threads

The Fix: Clean thoroughly and use a tiny dab of e-liquid on the threads before reassembly. Smooth as goat’s butter.

Conclusion: A Clean Atomizer is a Happy Atomizer

There you have it, folks—your complete guide to cleaning your RDA or RTA like a pro. It might seem like a chore at first, but once you get in the habit, it’s quick, easy, and totally worth it. Clean gear equals great flavour, reliable performance, and less drama. And hey, your vape deserves to shine.

Stay tuned for Part 3, where we get down and dirty with rewicking and cleaning your coils—because even the best setup can’t save a crusty old build.

Part 3: Rewicking & Coil Cleaning – Fresh Starts & Maximizing Life

Hey folks!

Your Old Goat here, and welcome to the grand finale of our little vape maintenance adventure! In Part 1, we made sure your mod and batteries weren’t about to turn into hand grenades. In Part 2, we gave your atomizer the spa treatment it deserved. And now, it’s time to dig into the real nitty-gritty—the part that makes the magic happen: rewicking and coil cleaning.

This is where your vape either shines or sputters. Fresh cotton and clean coils aren’t just nice to have—they’re essential if you want flavour that pops and clouds that roll. So, let’s roll up those sleeves, grab your tweezers, and give your vape a fresh start.

Section 1: When Do You Know It’s Time?

Your vape talks. You just have to listen.

Muted or Funky Flavour: That juicy strawberry cheesecake suddenly tastes like charred cardboard? Time to clean.

Weak Clouds: If your usual fog machine is puffing like a granny on a treadmill, your wick or coils might be the issue.

Dark or Crusty Cotton: Take a peek. If your cotton looks like it’s been through a barbecue, it’s overdue for a change.

Coil Gunk: That black crust? It’s caramelized sweetener. Tastes great in pudding, not so much in coils.

Frequent Dry Hits: Even with juice? That’s your cotton waving the white flag.

Section 2: Tools of the Trade

Get your gear ready before diving in:

🔧 Your Atomizer: Disassembled and ready to go (see Part 2 if you missed that step).

✂️ Tweezers (Ceramic preferred): For safe coil adjustments while firing.

🧼 Steel Brush or Coil Cleaning Tool: For scrubbing coils.

🐑 Vape Cotton: Cotton Bacon, Muji, Native Wicks—whatever your wooly heart desires.

🔪 Sharp Scissors: For cutting your cotton just right.

⚡ Ohm Reader/Mod: To check resistance and pulse coils.

🧻 Paper Towels: Always handy. You’ll thank yourself.

💧 Your Favourite E-liquid: The reward at the end.

🛁 Ultrasonic Cleaner (Optional): For that spa-day coil clean.

Section 3: Cleaning Your Coils – The Burn & Brush Ritual

Step 1: Remove Old Wick

Gently tug the spent cotton out. Don’t force it—if it’s fused or burnt on, snip it and pull slowly.

Step 2: Mount Deck on Mod or Ohm Reader

Screw the deck onto your mod or build tab. Set your wattage low (20–30W for dual coils, 15–20W for single).

Step 3: Dry Burn (Gently!)

Pulse your coils in short bursts until they glow a dull orange. No lava glows! You’re burning off residue, not cooking a steak. Let them cool between pulses.

Step 4: Scrub the Gunk

Once cool, use a coil brush or soft wire brush to remove the crusty carbon. It’ll flake right off.

Step 5: Repeat as Needed

Burn, cool, brush. Do this until your coils look like shiny little springs again.

Step 6: Pinch & Strum

If your coils are unevenly glowing, pinch them with ceramic tweezers while warm, or strum gently with a coil tool. You want even heating from the inside out.

🐐 Old Goat Tip: Never use metal tweezers on live coils unless you want a fireworks show.

Optional Step: Ultrasonic Cleaner (Coils Removed!)

For the OCD among us—once brushed, remove the coils and drop them into an ultrasonic cleaner with warm water. Run a cycle or two. You’ll be shocked by the leftover grime.

Final Dry Burn:

After drying or ultrasonic cleaning, reinstall the coils (if removed), and give them one last short pulse to ensure they’re dry and glowing evenly.

Section 4: Rewicking – The Art of the Fresh Wick

Step 1: Cut & Shape Your Cotton

Pull or cut a strip of cotton and gently roll one end to a point. For dual coils, prepare two equal strips.

🐐 Old Goat Tip: The cotton should slide through with light resistance. If it drags hard, it’s too much. If it flops through like spaghetti, it’s too little.

Step 2: Thread the Coil

Insert the pointed end through the coil and gently pull it until it’s centered.

Step 3: Trim the Tails

For RDAs: Tail should touch the bottom of the juice well.
For RTAs: Tail should fill—but not stuff—the wicking ports or tuck just below the deck.

🐐 Old Goat Tip: When in doubt, cut long—you can always trim more.

Step 4: Fluff & Comb

Fluff those tails like you're grooming a miniature sheep. For RTAs, comb down toward the juice channels to improve flow.

Step 5: Saturate with E-liquid

Drip juice generously onto the cotton and coils until they glisten. Let it soak for a couple minutes.

Step 6: Reassemble Your Atomizer

Put everything back together carefully. A drop of e-liquid on your O-rings helps everything slide into place.

Section 5: Avoiding Rookie Mistakes

🔥 Over-burning: Too much heat = brittle coils = hot spots = sadness.

🧽 Wick Too Tight: You’ll choke the juice flow. Dry hits ahoy.

💦 Wick Too Loose: Leaks, gurgles, and soggy regret.

🎯 Poor Coil Placement: Coils too high or off-center? Your airflow—and flavour—suffers.

⚖️ Unbalanced Coils (Dual Builds): Make sure both coils glow evenly. Uneven coils = uneven heating = uneven flavour.

Conclusion: The Freshest Vape Awaits!

And that’s it, folks! You’ve now got the full Old Goat system for keeping your vape gear in tip-top shape. Clean mod? Check. Pristine RDA/RTA? Check. Glowing coils and fluffy cotton? Check.

Rewicking might feel intimidating at first, but with a little practice, it becomes one of the most satisfying rituals in vaping. There’s nothing quite like that first hit off a fresh wick—pure flavour, clean performance, and clouds so thick you could lose your goat in them.

Thanks for joining me on this little journey through the guts of your gear. I hope these guides help keep you safe, save you money, and make your vaping experience better than ever.
